Weekend Recap 10/13-10/15
The Maine Nordiques took on the top team in the East division and team that eliminated them from the playoffs last season- the Maryland Black Bears for the first two of a three game weekend set that included the finale taking on the New Hampshire Mountain Kings on Sunday.
Friday:
The Nordiques opened the weekend peppering the Bears goaltender with shots. Outshooting the Bears 20-8 in the first period. The Nordiques also got two power plays in the period and the made the most of the second one as the East division star of the week would put home his first of the game with two minutes left in the period on a great feed from Laurent Trepanier and Nick Bernardo.

The Nordiques saw a good response from the Black Bears and physicality throughout the period but the Nordiques and goaltender Tommy Heaney held the Bears at bay in the second frame.
The third period lead didn’t slow down the Nordiques as they went back to the attack and Cody Pisarczyk would burry one off a feed from Nick Romeo. Nick Romeo would then put his team up by three with under five minutes to go in the frame. The Bears would respond but Cody Pisarczyk would put one into the empty net to seal the deal.

SATURDAY:
The Nordiques got out to a shaky start headed to the Penalty kill early but it didn’t let them stop them. They harnessed the energy from the previous night and Shane Kozlina would snipe one shorthanded to give his team and early lead. The bears would still remain on the power play and respond to tie it at one. Both teams went back and forth but the period would end one goal a side.

The second period featured a Bears double minor power play midway through the period. They would go back to back on it and take control. It was 3-1 Black Bears after two.
The third period was winding down and the Nordiques got a power play with two minutes left. Tommy Heaney would make a big blocker stop to keep it a 3-1 game. With that save the momentum turned. Nick Skerlick would call timeout and draw up a play with just 45 seconds left with an offensive zone faceoff. The Nordiques would control it and Charles Tardif would put home a one-time shot top shelf to make it 3-2 with 24 seconds left. The Nordiques would take the center ice faceoff with Heaney at the bench and won it cleanly. The Nordiques got it in the zone and the Bears tried to clear but Nick Bernardo kept it in the zone and fired it towards net. The puck was stopped in the slot but Helledy won a netfront battle and found Nick Romeo back door who sent one across to Tardif to tie it at three with just 4 seconds left.

The game would need overtime and the Nordiques were about to go on the power play, however Nick Romeo had other ideas as Tardif had the rush, dropped it for Nick Romeo and he slipped one five hole to win it for the Nordiques in the comeback of the century.

SUNDAY:
The Nordiques were taking on their rival New Hampshire Mountain Kings for the first game of the Margarita’s Piscataqua River Rivalry Cup.
The Nordiques wasted no time getting on the board as the OT Hero in the previous night would score just 26 seconds into the game. The Mountain Kings would get to another power play and make the most of it to tie it at one goal a side.

The Nordiques came out firing in the second period as Jake Bernadet would find the back of the net just 55 seconds in for another early tally. Nick Romeo would add his 4th goal of the weekend and the Nordiques would be in control up 3-1. The Mountain Kings would call timeout and power home four straight goals to end the period to make it 5-3 after two.

The third period started back and forth but the game swung with a Nordiques power play as Evan Orloff would put home his first as a Nordique this season. Charles Tardif would add another a minute and thirty seconds later to tie it up at 5. Both teams tried to find the back of the net until The Nordiques wouldn’t be able to clear it out of the zone and the Mountain kings would burry the game winner off a turnover with just five minutes left to win the game 6-5.

The Nordiques recorded 4/6 points for the weekend and will hit the road for two series against the Hat Tricks and Rebels before coming back home for Halloween hockey night!
