The Maine Nordiques took on the Jamestown Rebels for a two game set. The Nordiques also added two new faces in forward, Theo Thrun, and defenseman, Marty Marnzeaus.
The first period started with both teams feeling each other out and not many offensive chances for either side. There was one penalty in the frame, but the Nordiques penalty kill was able to kill it off. After some more neutral zone action, and non-threatening shots from both sides, thanks to good defense the first came to an end 0-0.
The second period started with a chance for both sides but both the Nordiques and Rebels were unable to covert. Special teams were also tested as the Nordiques and Rebels skated 4 on 4 and both teams killed off two penalties a side. With time winding down in the second Evan Orloff made a great defensive play to free up the puck for Reese Farrell. Farrell then found Brendan Gibbons who was able to make a clean pass to Nick Bernardo who cut towards the front of the net, switch to the backhand and convert for the first goal of the game almost two full periods in. Less than two minutes after new-comer, Theo Thrun, was able to find the back of the net for his first of the season. The Rebels would then respond with a goal of their own just seconds later. 2-1 Nords after 2.
The third period started with a Rebels goal just 2:18 into the frame. The Nordiques would then get a power play right after but wouldn’t be able to convert. After some back and forth the Nordiques would go onto a penalty kill with 5:40 left in the game but were able to kill it off. With just seconds left, Tristan Fasig would break into the zone with speed and fire a shot that would be inches away from ending the game but hit the post with less than a full second left we would need OT.
The Nordiques started OT with a big save from Avery Sturtz and have a chance of their own but Theo Thrun was stopped. The Nordiques would get another chance from Marty Marnzeaus but he was also stopped. The Rebels would then get a half breakaway and a shot would be stopped by Sturtz but then rolled passed the goal line and into the net for the OT win. 3-2 Rebels win in OT.
The Nordiques are back in action tomorrow against the Rebels for teacher appreciation night and our annual teddy bear toss at 7pm.
