The Maine Nordiques champions of The East Division took on The South Division champs in a Robertson Cup Semi-Final matchup best of 3 series; where the winner will move onto the Robertson Cup final on Tuesday.
The Nordiques needed a strong start to set the tone in the game against The Bugs and they got just that; as Caden Pattison chopped the puck along the boards to James Philpott at the blue line who fired a wrist shot that got tipped by a Mudbugs stick and went into the back of the net. 1-0 Nords just 34 seconds in! The Mudbugs would respond just 1:22 later; however as a wrap around opportunity was stopped by Ty Outen, but a second chance on the rebound was put home to tie it at 1. The Mudbugs and Nords would then battle to the horn and conclude the period knotted up at 1 a side.
The second period got started off quickly with a Mudbugs goal on the power play as their defenseman pinched down off the blue line and got fed a backdoor pass. The Nords would try to respond, but The Bugs forecheck would cause a turnover and extend their lead 3-1. The Bugs forecheck would then keep the Nordiques at bay and prevent them to score. 3-1 Bugs after the second period.
The Nordiques would need a big 3rd period to come back. They had a better breakout and managed the puck better, but couldn’t test the Bugs goalie enough to generate offense. Ty Outen kept The Nords in it with some big stops but the bugs would score with just 5 minutes left to put the game out of reach and take game 1, 4-1.
Game 2 is tomorrow night at 7:30 where the Nords try to force a game 3.
